The Violation of Cooperative Principle in Epic Series Game of Thrones - Season 1: A Pragmatics Study

Penelitian ini, berjudul "Pelanggaran Kerjasama Prinsip di Epik Seri "Game of Thrones - Season 1: Sebuah Kajian Pragmatik", adalah upaya untuk menyelidiki pelanggaran Prinsip Kerjasama yang ditemukan dalam film seri. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (i) untuk menjelaskan pelanggaran Prinsip Kerjasama dan (ii) mengidentifikasi maksim yang paling sering dilanggar dalam film tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analitik. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari transkrip film kemudian diurutkan berdasarkan pelanggaran Prinsip Kerjasama. Kemudian data dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan pragmatis. Jenis-jenis pelanggaran dianalisa dengan menerapkan teori prinsip kerja sama oleh Grice (1975) yaitu: Maksim Kualitas, Maksim Kuantitas, Maksim Relevansi dan Maksim Pelaksanaan. Maksim ini dapat ditemukan dalam semua 10 episode. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, 346 kasus pelanggaran Maksim Grice ditemukan: 37 kasus (12%) melanggar maksim Kualitas, 139 kasus (40%) melanggar maksim Kuantitas, 38 kasus (10%) melanggar maksim Relevansi, dan 132 kasus (38%) melanggar maksim Pelaksanaan. Beberapa ucapan yang disampaikan oleh karakter-karakter ditemukan dalam bentuk sarkasme. Sarkasme yang ditujukan memiliki beberapa makna seperti untuk menyinggung, menolak, melarang, mengolok orang lain, mengancam, menuduh, dan menjelaskan. Maksim Kuantitas dan maksim Pelaksanaan merupakan maksim yang sama-sama paling banyak dilanggar.

This study, entitled The Violation of Cooperative Principle in The Epic Series of Game of Thrones - Season 1: A Pragmatics Study, attempts to investigate the violations of the Cooperative Principle found in the film series. The aims of this study are (i) to describe violations of the Cooperative Principle and (ii) to identify the most violated maxims in the movie. This research is an analytical study. The data used in this research were taken from the transcript of the movie then sorted based on the violation of Cooperative Principle. Then the data were analyzed by using pragmatic approach. Types of violation were analyzed by applying Grice's theory of Cooperative Principle (1975) namely: Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Relevance and Maxim of Manner. The violation of these can be found in all 10 episodes. Based on the data obtained, 346 cases of the violation of Gricean Maxims were found: 37 cases (12%) violate the maxim of Quality, 139 cases (40%) violate the maxim of Quantity, 38 cases (10%) violate the maxim of Relevance, and 132 cases (38%) violate the maxim of Manner. Many speeches uttered by the characters found in form of sarcasm. The intended sarcasm has several meaning such as to insult, reject, prohibit, make fun of the others, threat, protect, accuse, and explain. The maxim of Quantity and the maxim of Manner are the most commonly violated maxims.
