THE FORMULA OF CLASSICAL DETECTIVE STORY IN FIVE CONAN DOYLE�S SHERLOCK HOLMES STORIES

Penelitian yang berjudul The Formula of The Classical Detective Story in Five Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmess Story ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui formula cerita detektif klasik karya Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Objek dalam penelitian ini bersumber dari buku Memoir of Sherlock Holmes. Adapun data yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah terdiri dari lima cerita yaitu Silver Blaze, The Musgrave Ritual, The Adventure of Yellow face, The Crooked Man, dan The Stock-Broker's Clerk. Penelitian untuk menemukan formula dari cerita detektif klasik ini dilakukan melalui empat tahapan, yaitu pembacaan secara intensif, pemilihan lima cerita yang dianggap paling representatif, penentuan teori dan analisis data. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif dan menggunakan kata-kata biasa. Hasil penelitian penelitian ini menggunakan teori Cawelti. Hal ini dikarenakan teori yang digunakan Cawelti dapat diaplikasikan kepada cerita yang ditulis oleh Conan Doyle, sehingga dapat ditemukan lima formula berbeda yang digunakan pada cerita Sherlock Holmes.

This study, entitled The Formula of The Classical Detective Story in Five Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmess Story is conducted to seek the formula of the classic detective story by Sir Arthut Conan Doyle. The object of this research is taken from the book Memoir of Sherlock Holmes. The data used in this research consists of five stories which are Silver Blaze, The Musgrave Ritual, The Adventure of Yellow face, The Crooked Man, and The Stock-Broker's Clerk. The study to find the formula of classic detective story is executed through five phases, which are intensive reading, selecting five stories that are considered to be the most representating, determining the theory and the data analysis. The data analysis is done in descriptive style and using general words. The result of this research study uses Cawelti's theory. It is because the formula theory from Cawelti can be applied to the stories written by Conan Doyle therefore, it can be found at least five different formulas that are used in the Sherlock Holmes story.
