Bertahan di tengah gelombang krisis :: Komunitas Cina dan ekonomi Kota Cirebon pada masa depresi ekonomi, 1930-1940

Dibangun di atas sebuah premis yang menyatakan bahwa depresi ekonomi tahun 1930-an, adalah peristiwa ekonomi penting yang telah menimbulkan dampak sosial ekonomi yang luas di Pulau Jawa. Studi ini ini diarahkan untuk mengungkapkan dampak krisis ekonomi tahun 1930-an itu pada tingkat lokal, yaitu di Kota Cirebon, dan melalui pengalaman yang dirasakan oleh komunitas Cina. Permasalahan penelitian yang diagendakan adalah bagaimana depresi ekonomi tahun 1930-an mempengaruhi kehidupan sosial ekonomis komunitas Cina di Kota Cirebon, Apa makna depresi ekonomi bagi komunitas Cina Kota Cirebon, dan bagaimana mereka merespon dampak-dampak yang muncul akibat dari peristiwa dimaksud. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa depresi ekonomi tahun 1930-an, secara umum, telah menimbulkan berbagai dampak sosial ekonomis terhadap komunitas Cina di Kota Cirebon. Meski demikian, pengaruh tersebut dirasakan secara berbeda oleh berbagai kelompok sosial dalam komunitas Cina Kota Cirebon. Bagi pengusaha besar yang terlibat dalam produksi komoditas ekspor dunia, depresi ekonomi dirasakan sangat berat. Sedangkan bagi pengusaha kecil dan menengah depresi ekonomi tidak menimbulkan dampak yang berat. Sebagian dari mereka bahkan memperoleh berkah, blesing in disguise, dari depresi ekonomi tahun 1930-an. Oleh karena itu, depresi ekonomi memiliki makna dan dimaknai secara berbeda oleh berbagai kelompok dalam komunitas Cina. Bagi sebagian kelompok depresi ekonomi merupakan bencana, sedangkan bagi kelompok yang lain depresi ekonomi merupakan berkah. Perbedaan pemaknaan itu, akhirnya menimbulkan perbedaan respon dan siasat sosial ekonomis di kalangan komunitas Cina di Kota Cirebon. Perbedaan respon itu sendiri mencerminkan kekuatan ekonomi, modal sosial, dan kreativitas dalam mencari jalan keluar.

Based on a premise that the 1930s economic depression is a crucial economic event affected the whole social and economic life of Java, this study aimed to uncover the impact of the economic depression in the local level, on the case of Cirebon City, and on the life of local Chinese Community. The research question of this study is how the 1930s economic depression affected the social economic life of the Chinese Community in Cirebon; and how they responded the impact of the event in their life. The study depicted that the 1930s economic depression has resulted various impacts on the social economic life of the Chinese Community in Cirebon City. However, the impact experienced differently among social groups within Chinese Community of Cirebon City. The big businessmen involved in world market commodities were severe most by the impact. On the other way around, the small and middle scale businessmen the depression is not affected severely. But, some of them got a blessing in disguise, from the 1930s economic depression. Therefore, the 1930s economic depression has a different meaning or differently interpreted for different groups in the Chinese Community of Cirebon City. For one group, it was a disaster but blessing, fortune, for the others. Those differents meaning came up different responds and social economic strategies among Chinese Community in Cirebon City. And, finally those different responds reflected the different economic power, social capital, and creativity to find a way out from the difficulties during the years of depression.
