Perubahan sosial dan kecenderungan kehidupan seksual di Jawa awal abad XX

Tesis ini bertujuan menulis sejarah sosial dengan mencermati perubahan-perubahan perilaku seksual di Jawa awal abad ke-20 berkaitan dengan transisi sosial dan kultural masyarakat. Melihat faktor-faktor yang mendorong terjadinya berbagai kasus tersebut di lingkungan masyarakat Jawa. Selain itu, diharapkan dapat memberikan manfaat untuk memahami dinamika seks di Jawa serta dapat mengetahui hubungan antara masyarakat yang sedang berubah dengan fenomena seks yang terjadi. Untuk melacak permasalahan itu, publikasi dalam surat kabar yang terbit di Jawa awal abad ke-20 menjadi sumber utama, tulisan-tulisan dan terbitan buku periode yang sama dengan fokus penelitian. Kecenderungan kehidupan seksual di Jawa awal abad ke-20 menunjukkan, bahwa terjadi perubahan perilaku seks pada masyarakat yang dipengaruhi oleh dinamika penduduk, ekonomi, industrialisasi, dan apresiasi masyarakat melalui iklan obat kuat dalam surat kabar. Hasil penelitian memberikan gambaran pengaruh iklan obat kuat menstimulasi persepsi masyarakat terhadap seks, diiringi oleh munculnya ekonomi kapitalisme dari Barat. Secara riil, dunia seks di perkotaan Jawa berkembang melampaui batas-batas normatif, ditandai dengan munculnya prostitusi di Surabaya, Batavia, Jawa Tengah dan kota lainnya. Pada bagian lain, aborsi dan penyakit kelamin mewarnai kehidupan masyarakat Jawa, yang kesemuanya membuktikan seks semakin terbuka menjelang akhir kolonial Belanda di Jawa. Bentuk dan perilaku prostitusi menurut berbagai pendapat meningkat drastis pada abad ke-19 terutama setelah 1870 sampai menjelang awal abad ke-20 ketika ekonomi kolonial dibuka untuk modal swasta. Selanjutnya, penerapan sistem pendidikan Barat yang telah merebak di perkotaan semakin mempercepat lajunya proses modernisasi yang merubah secara struktural lapisan sosial tertentu di masyarakat Jawa awal abad ke-20, tentu saja hal ini membawa implikasi secara tidak langsung pada gaya hidup, termasuk perubahan perilaku seksualitas. Kenyataannya rangkaian proses perubahanperubahan yang berkembang telah mereduksi struktur masyarakat agraris, feodalisme, tradisional menuju masyarakat perkotaan yang bersifat modern.

The aim this thesis is to write a social history on the shifting and changing sexual behavior of Urban Java in the early 20th Century, which are related with the social and cultural transition of the Javanese society of the time. This study also tries uncover the influencing factors of those changing sexual behavior among Javanese society. This study hopefully could give a contribution to understand the relationship between the social changes with the sexual attitudes among Javanese society. Therefore to trace the phenomenon, use popular publication such as newspapers, magazines, etc. as primary sources, beside books, articles, and another academic writing, which were concern on the same topic with this study. The sexual life trend of Java in the early 20th Century showed that the change of sexual behavior among Javanese society was influenced by several factors; demographic dynamic, economy, industrialization, and social appreciation toward newspaper advertisements of sexual medicine – Viagra (obat kuat). The research shows that the sexual advertisements had stimulated a social perception on sex among society. In fact, the sexual world in urban Java had developed beyond normative values, which was indicated by the emerge of prostitution in Surabaya, Batavia, Central Java and another cities. On the other hand, abortion and sexual diseases gave color to the Javanese life of the time. The facts proved that sex in the late colonial period, had been become a public discourse. Forms and attitudes of prostitution in Java, according to some experts, increased rapidly since the 19th Century, mainly after 1870 until early decades of 20th Century, when the colonial economy opened up to private investments. Furthermore, the application of Western education system in urban Java had been speeded up the modernization process, which then changed the social structure of certain layers of Javanese society in the early 20th Century. These brought together the indirect impacts to the life style of Javanese society, including their sexual behavior. As the matter of facts, those changing had reduced the agrarian nature of Javanese social structure, feudalism, and traditionalism toward a modern urban society.
