In Search of Economic Resilience: Doi Moi Policies and the Fashion Industries in Vietnam

Vietnam mengalami pertumbuhan ekonomi yang dramatis dalam empat dekade terakhir. Kenaikan ini tidak dapat dipisahkan dari perubahan struktural yang terjadi sejak diterapkannya kebijakan Doi Moi pada Desember 1986. Kebijakan reformasi ini terutama digunakan untuk mengubah baik proses pembuatan kebijakan maupun kelembagaan agar lebih ramah terhadap FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) guna mendongkrak pertumbuhan ekonomi negara tersebut. Salah satu sektor manufaktur utama yang pertumbuhannya sangat dipengaruhi kebijakan Doi Moi adalah industri mode yang menyediakan lapangan kerja serta mengurangi kemiskinan secara eksponensial. Skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan ekonomi politik kritis, sebagaimana dikenal sebagai pendekatan Murdoch, untuk memahami bagaimana kebijakan Doi Moi mendukung pertumbuhan industri mode Vietnam dan, terlepas dari kontradiksi, berhasil dipertahankan menjadi dasar kebijakan industri Vietnam saat ini.

Vietnam has experienced dramatic economic growth in the past four decades. This rise is inseparable from structural changes happened since the adoption of Doi Moi policy in December 1986. The reformation policy is mainly used to reform both the process of policy-making and the institutions so that it will be more friendly to FDI in order to boost the country�s economic growth. One of the main manufacturing sectors which growth is highly influenced by the Doi Moi policy is the fashion industry which absorb huge number of employments and exponentially reduce poverty. This thesis will use a critical political economy, known as the Murdoch school, approach to understand how the Doi Moi policy support the growth of Vietnam�s fashion industry and, despite of the contradictions, successfully maintained to be the basis of Vietnam�s current industrial policy.
