Healthcare workers with a high risk of being infected with COVID-19 must use personal protective equipment (PPE). The PPE worn creates microclimate conditions around the skin due to its impermeable nature, which has the potential to cause discomfort and symptoms of heat strain. Not only during activities, but the physiological load is also still there when resting because the body's core temperature may still increase. This physiological load must be reduced immediately, and post-cooling is one way. This study aims to identify the effect of using PCM-based cooling vests worn outside of PPE level II and III PPE for medical personnel after physical activity on reducing heat strain, both physiologically and perceptually. The subjects in this study were ten female medical personnel (age: 28.3±2.63 years). Subjects performed physical activity walking on a treadmill with a workload of 65% HRmax for 40 minutes and continued with 30 minutes of recovery phase while wearing PPE level II and PPE level III either with or without a cooling vest in an environment with a temperature of 25.3±0.9 Celcius, 48.01±4.22% RH. The experiment was divided into two conditions: the recovery phase condition without a cooling vest as a control condition (CONT) and the recovery phase condition with a cooling vest with frozen PCM (COOLING). Measurement of physiological and subjective parameters was carried out during the experiment. The results showed that wearing a cooling vest during the recovery phase of level II PPE can accelerate skin temperature recovery with a rate of 0.03 Celcius/min starting from the 1st minute and body temperature recovery with a rate of 0.01 Celcius/min starting from the 0.5th minute. At level III PPE, the cooling vest can accelerate the reduction in skin temperature with a rate of 0.05 Celcius/min starting from the beginning and a reduction in body temperature with a rate of 0.014 Celcius/min starting from the 1.5th minutes. From these results, the cooling vest can be considered a strategy to accelerate the reduction of heat strain after using PPE for healthcare workers.
