Wacana Rasisme dalam Film: Analisis Wacana Kritis dalam Film When They See Us (2019)

Rasisme di Amerika adalah sebuah penyakit yang terus menerus dipelihara. Negara yang bertanggung jawab dalam reproduksi penyakit sosial tersebut tidak serta merta bisa terus mempertahankannya apabila masyarakat memiliki kesadaran untuk merubahnya. Ava Duvernay, perempuan berdarah Afrika-Amerika memproduksi serial yang berjudul When They See Us (2019). Terkenal dengan film-filmnya yang menceritakan tentang perjuangan hidup kulit hitam di tengah gejolak rasisme, Ava mengangkat satu kasus paling terkenal di New York ke dalam serial yang terbagi menjadi empat episode. Serial When They See Us (2019), dengan komprehensif menyampaikan diskriminasi yang terselubung dalam sistem bernegara di Amerika Serikat. Analisis wacana kritis Norman Fairclough menjadi landasan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui wacana rasisme terhadap masyarakat kulit hitam dalam serial When They See Us (2019). Analisis dilakukan melalui dua tahapan, yakni level teks (mikro) dan praktik sosio-kultural (makro). Pada level mikro, wacana rasisme terhadap masyarakat kulit hitam tergambar dalam tindak kekerasan oleh pihak berwajib, prasangka dan diskriminasi, serta pemberitaan media yang penuh dengan stereotipe. Bentuk perlawanan terhadap rasisme juga ditemukan pada analisis teks berupa solidaritas yang berdasar pada rasa ketertindasan yang sama-sama dirasakan oleh masyarakat kulit hitam. Melalui serial ini, Ava ingin mengupas tuntas rasisme yang sistematis di Amerika, serta mendobrak dominasi ideologi rasisme di Amerika dengan cara yang sentimentil. Ava juga ingin membuktikan bahwa melalui When They See Us, sebuah serial tidak hanya sekedar hiburan semata, tapi juga dapat menjadi bentuk perlawanan terhadap rasisme.

Racism in America is an ongoing disease. The state which is responsible for the reproduction of these social ills cannot necessarily continue to maintain them if the public has the awareness to change them. Ava Duvernay, an African-American woman, produced a series entitled When They See Us (2019). Famous for her films that tell about the struggle of black life amid the turmoil of racism, Ava raised one of the most well-known cases in New York into a series that is divided into four episodes. The series When They See Us (2019) comprehensively conveys the discrimination that is hidden in the state system in the United States. Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis became the basis of this research to find out the discourse of racism against black people in the series When They See Us (2019). The analysis was carried out in two stages: the level of text (micro) and socio-cultural practice (macro). At the micro-level, the discourse of racism against black people is reflected in acts of violence by the authorities, prejudices, discrimination, and media coverage full of stereotypes. The form of resistance to racism is also found in the text analysis in the form of solidarity based on a sense of oppression that is shared by black people. Through this series, Ava wants to thoroughly explore the systematic racism in America, and break the domination of the ideology of racism in America in a sentimental way. Ava also wants to prove that a series is not just for entertainment, but can also be a form of resistance to racism through When They See Us.
