Violations of Gricean Maxims in the American Television Series The Good Place

Percakapan menjadi salah satu bentuk komunikasi yang tak terpisahkan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari. Dalam suatu percakapan, penutur dan pendengar harus saling memahami dan bekerjasama sehingga tujuan mereka berkomunikasi dapat tercapai. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, H. Paul Grice (1975) telah memperkenalkan maksim percakapan (maksim Grice) yang dapat digunakan sebagai pedoman agar suatu komunikasi dapat berjalan dengan baik. Meskipun begitu, pada keadaan tertentu orang-orang seringkali secara sengaja melakukan pelanggaran terhadap maksim-maksim tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pelanggaran-pelanggaran maksim Grice yang terdapat pada serial The Good Place dari musim 1 sampai musim 4. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini juga berfokus pada identifikasi tujuan yang mungkin melatarbelakangi terjadinya pelanggaran-pelanggaran maksim Grice. Data penelitian ini berupa tuturan para tokoh serial The Good Place yang mengandung pelanggaran maksim. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisa secara kualitatif menggunakan teori maksim percakapan Grice (1975) untuk selanjutnya diidentifikasi dan diklasifikasikan kedalam 4 jenis pelanggaran menurut klasifikasi Grice (1975) tersebut. Sementara itu, kemungkinan-kemungkinan tujuan dibalik setiap pelanggaran diidentifikasi dan diklasifikasi berdasarkan implikaturnya. Hasil dari analisa data menunjukkan bahwa: (1) keempat jenis pelanggaran maksim Grice ditemukan di seluruh musim serial The Good Place dengan total 213 pelanggaran. (2) Pelanggaran maksim kualitas dengan persentase 52.6 persen menjadi pelanggaran maksim yang paling sering dilakukan oleh para tokoh. (3) Musim pertama menjadi musim dengan pelanggaran maksim terbanyak dengan keseluruhan 74 pelanggaran. Hal ini berkaitan erat dengan alur cerita serial ini yang mendorong semua karakter melanggar maksim untuk mempertahankan keberadaannya di Good Place. (4) Menyesatkan lawan bicara menjadi tujuan pelanggaran maksim yang paling dominan ditemukan pada serial ini karena para karakter seringkali memberi informasi yang salah untuk menciptakan kesalahpahaman.

Conversation has become means of communication which is inseparable from everyday life. In a conversation, a speaker and a hearer ought to understand and cooperate with each other so that their communication goals will be successfully achieved. In this regard, H. Paul Grice (1975) has proposed conversational maxims (Gricean maxims) which can be used as a guideline for people on how to communicate effectively. However, under certain circumstances, people often deliberately violate those maxims. This research aims to examine violations of Gricean maxims in The Good Place series season one until season four. Moreover, this research also focuses on identifying the purposes which might cause the violations. All characters utterances containing maxim violations were collected as the data which were subsequently analyzed qualitatively employing the theory of Gricean conversational maxims before finally being identified and classified into four types of violations based on Grice (1975) classification. Meanwhile, some possible purposes lying behind each violation were identified and classified based on their implicatures. The result of the data analysis reveals that: (1) all four types of maxim violations are identified in all seasons of The Good Place series with a total of 213 occurrences. (2) Violation of maxim of quality with a percentage of 52.6 becomes the most frequent violation committed by the characters. (3) Season one is the season with the most occurrences of maxim violations with a total finding of 74 occurrences. It is closely related to the plot of the series which drives all the characters to violate the maxims in order to maintain their existence in the Good Place. (4) Misleading interlocutor is the most dominant purpose found in the series as all the characters frequently provide wrong information to create misunderstanding.
