Until the end of the 19th century, Russian literature was filled by nobleman writers such as Tolstoy, Turgenev, and Dostoevsky. In 1862 when the Tsar abolished slavery, a new middle class arose which helped give rise to the names of new writers who were not from the nobility. One of the writers who got a place at that time was Maksim Gorky, a writer who was born from a workers family. This study aims to analyze Gorky's capital, and strategy in utilizing, processing and developing his capital to contest in the literary field using the Cultural Production Arena concept proposed by Pierre Bourdieu. The findings of this study indicate that Gorky entered the literary field when changes were taking place in the Russian literary field. Writers who have gained legitimacy have passed their productive period. Gorky then took advantage of cultural and social capital to enter the literary field. Gorky has additional capital in the form of specific legitimacy from Chekhov. The novelty that Gorky offered in the arena of Russian literature was the point of view of the rapidly growing and self-organizing working class. Gorky carried out a capital conversion strategy by donating money to the revolutionary movement, this made Gorky have a central role in the Russian revolution along with Lenin. In addition, social capital in the form of closeness to Lenin as well as intellectual groups was used by Gorky to deal with the dominant structure that was trying to maintain the status quo and reduce Gorky's increasing legitimacy. Gorky also carried out a reproduction strategy by consistently writing literary works with the theme of the struggle of the revolutionary group and the working class. Gorky's negotiations with Stalin at the congress of the Soviet Writers' Union were Gorky's successive strategy to perpetuate the socialist realism school he developed.
