The academic literature has begun examining the level of life satisfaction of Indonesian from various perspectives, however the perspective of gay men living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is not discussed. This study aims to determine the perceived level of life satisfaction and the subjective views of gay men living with HIV in Indonesia. The embedded concurrent-mixed methods study design was used in this study by combining a quantitative subjective assessment of life satisfaction using the satisfaction with life scale that was explored in detail with three open-ended questions as the qualitative component. An online survey was administered adopting the snowball sampling technique to recruit participants and collect data. Based on an analysis of 84 participants from 16 provinces in Indonesia, it is found that 60.7% of participants have a relatively high subjective assessment of life satisfaction, with a range from slightly satisfied to very satisfied. Acceptance and gratitude influence these perceived levels of life satisfaction. Participants reported several different views regarding the effect of homosexual orientation and HIV infection on the level of life satisfaction. The increased capacity for knowledge, self-esteem, and self-awareness is the participant's greatest achievement as a gay man with HIV infection so far. Participants hope to be able to pursue their goals and get a sense of security (safety needs) from the environment. The results of this study can be used as a basis for further research in the field of psychology, particularly on aspects of subjective well-being such as life satisfaction targeting groups of gay men living with HIV.
