The use of lithium in battery manufacturing has grown significantly in recent years, notably in the global market. Due to the increasing demand for lithium, an exploitable lithium source is needed. Alternative sources that are still being studied are seawater and geothermal brine. Both of these sources have less lithium, but judging from the availability of raw materials and ease of manufacture, these two sources have great potential as alternative sources of lithium exploitation. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of operating variables on the performance of increasing lithium concentration from geothermal salt water using an environmentally friendly and efficient process. This research was conducted to concentrate lithium from synthetic geothermal brine using the Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) method. This DCMD tool uses the difference in vapor pressure on both sides of the membrane as a driving force. The feed solution was varied at various temperatures and flow rates while the permeate side temperature was maintained at 25°C. Feed temperatures were varied at 60, 50, and 40°C and feed flow rates at 420, 260, and 180 ml/min. To reduce the blockage of the membrane, synthetic geothermal brine is used. The experimental results show that operating temperature and flow rate have a significant influence on the lithium concentration process from synthetic geothermal brine. The increase in operating temperature and feed flow rate in the DCMD system indicates an increase in the lithium concentration in the retentate and the resulting permeate flux. The highest concentration was obtained at a temperature of 60°C at a flow rate of 420 ml/min. The highest flux mean was obtained at 60°C at 7.3 LMH, followed by temperatures at 50 and 40°C at 5.3 and 2.7 LMH. In addition to the flux, the Liquid enter pressure (LEP) value of 7.3 bar is also obtained which indicates the strength of the membrane to withstand vapor pressure, so that wetting does not occur during the process.
