Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been successfully synthesized by the green-synthesis method using Moringa oleifera with variations in incubation time and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) concentration. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) behavior of AgNPs was investigated using the Kretschmann configuration type, the successive layer arrangement is prism/Au/AgNPs/air. The analysis using transmission electron microscopy showed AgNPs were spherical with the average particle size increasing as incubation time increased namely (22 ± 1,0) and (23 ± 0,6) nm for 24 and 48 hours, respectively, as well as decreasing as PVP concentration increased namely (20 ± 0.8), (19 ± 0,6), and (15 ± 0.4) nm for concentrations of 1.70, 2.55 and 4.25 ppm, respectively. The analysis using selected area electron diffraction proves that the crystal structure of Ag is face centered cubic. The analysis using UV-Vis spectroscopy gave localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands at 326 nm and 328 nm for 24 and 48 hours incubation, respectively. The addition of PVP concentration gave the LSPR peak shifted to a smaller wavelength region at 325, 323 and 321 nm for concentrations of 1.70, 2.55 and 4.25 ppm, respectively. The analysis using Fourier transform infra-red shows MO contains protein, phenolic, flavonoid, and terpenoid compounds. In addition, the wavenumber shift indicates the occurrence of intermolecular interactions between PVP and AgNPs. The SPR result showed the SPR curve experienced a smaller shift in the incidence angle as the incubation time increased and a larger shift as the PVP concentration increased. This proves that the treatment with variations in incubation time and PVP concentration can control the SPR characteristics of AgNPs which has the potential to enhance the performance of SPR-based sensors.
