Chlorophyll-a concentration in aquatic environment is one of the key productivity indicators that plays a critical role in determining trophic status because they signal the availability of phytoplankton biomass, nutrients, and fish resources. The purpose of this study is to examine the variability of chlorophyll-a concentration in the waters off the Sangihe-Talaud Islands by analyzing satellite data of chlorophyll-a, sea surface temperature (SST), and wind speed from 2003 to 2020. Aqua MODIS Level 3 data of chlorophyll-a and SST were used, whereas ECMWF Reanalysis v5 data of wind speed were used (ERA5). Monthly climatological composites were generated from all data and then presented in the form of monthly climatological maps. The results showed that variability of the chlorophyll-a concentration in the waters off the Sangihe-Talaud Islands was influenced by the intensity of monsoon winds. Through upwelling process, the Northwest and Southeast Monsoons winds increased the chlorophyll-a concentration and decreased the SST, resulting in a relatively higher fertility of the waters off the Sangihe-Talaud Islands. During Transitional Season I and Transitional Season II, the waters off the Sangihe-Talaud Islands have the characteristics of low wind speed, low chlorophyll-a concentration, and high SST. This condition causes the research area to be infertile due to the absence of upwelling.
