Strongest Amongst the Dude? Analisis Female Masculinity Karakter Carol Danvers dalam Film Captain Marvel (2019)

Dalam film superhero, karakter perempuan biasanya muncul hanya sebagai karakter pendukung atau love interest. Hal ini bahkan menjadi trope yang sangat umum di dalam suatu karya fiksi (baik itu film, buku, komik, atau serial tv). Carol Danvers dalam film Captain Marvel (2019) hadir sebagai karakter protagonis di film solonya, juga menjadikannya film solo superhero perempuan pertama yang di produksi oleh Marvel Studio. Sebelumnya, competitor utama dari Marvel Studio, yakni DC Comics telah lebih dahulu merilis film superhero solo perempuan dengan film Wonder Woman (2017) beberapa tahun sebelumnya. Terlihat jelas bagaimana Marvel mencoba untuk membuat dan menampilkan karakter superhero perempuan yang berbeda dari superhero perempuan lainnya, terutama sebagai sosok superhero yang rumornya akan memimpin franchise Avengers. Penelitian ini menunjukkan apa yang membuat Captain Marvel berbeda dan unik dibandingkan dengan karakter superhero perempuan yang sudah ada sebelumnya. Keunikkan ini terlihat dalam konsep Female Masculinity, istilah yang di konseptualisasi oleh Jack Halberstam. Penelitian ini juga menghubungkan female masculinity dengan permasalahan queer baiting dalam film. Saat mencoba untuk lebih memahami female masculinity, penelitian ini menemukan masih cukup banyak miskonsepsi mengenai konsep female masculinity dengan konsep hegemonic masculinity di tubuh perempuan. Penelitian ini juga menemukan terdapat usaha untuk menciptakan karakter perempuan yang berdaya, namun sayangnya usaha-usaha tersebut justru jatuh ke dalam banyak sekali kesalah pahaman. Sehingga alih-alih memberdayakan karakter Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Marvel justru mengukuhkan bahwa untuk menjadi superhero terkuat, maka sosok tersebut harus terlihat maskulin atau memiliki nilai-nilai maskulinitas dominan.

In superhero movies, female characters usually have a role as supporting character or love interest. It has been that way for a long time, even became a common trope in fiction (be it movies, books, comics, or tv shows. Carol Danvers from Captain Marvel (2019) emerged as a main protagonist in her own solo film and marked the first female superhero by Marvel Studio. While Marvel�s main competitor in the industry, DC Comics had released their own solo female superhero movie with Wonder Woman (2017) first. It was clear Marvel tried to make their female superhero distinctive from other female superheroes, especially as the one rumored to be the next leader of their Avengers franchise. This research attempted to show what makes Captain Marvel so distinctive and unique compared to other already existing and established female superheroes. That uniqueness comes in the form of Female Masculinity, a term coined by Jack Halberstam. This research also linked the female masculinity with queer baiting problem in movies. In an attempt to understand more about female masculinity, this research found that there are still a lot of misconception about the concept of female masculinity with hegemonic masculinity in a female body. This research also found that while there were attempts to create a female superhero that are empowered, a lot of it unfortunately became a series of misunderstandings. So instead of empowering the character of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Marvel showed that in order to be the strongest superhero, one has to appear masculine or displaying lots of hegemonic masculinity traits.
