PENERJEMAHAN ISTILAH BUDAYA PADA NOVEL GADIS PANTAI KE DALAM NOVEL THE GIRL FROM THE COAST

Penerjemahan merupakan proses pengalihan pesan dari bahasa sumber ke dalam bahasa sasaran. Bahasa dan budaya tidak dapat dipisahkan karena Bahasa merupakan refleksi dari gaya hidup suatu masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap jenis istilah budaya apa saja yang terdapat dalam novel Gadis Pantai karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer berdasarkan teori Newmark (1988) beserta strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh Harry Aveling dan Willem Samuels sebagai penerjemah dalam novel terjemahan Inggrisnya dengan menggunakan teori Mona Baker (2011). Data penelitian ini berupa istilah budaya Indonesia khususnya Jawa beserta terjemahannya ke dalam Bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif komparatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 150 istilah budaya yang ditemukan yang terdiri dari istilah budaya material, istilah budaya sosial, istilah organisasi, istilah ekologi dan istilah budaya gestur tubuh dan kebiasaan. Dalam penelitian ini, penerjemah pertama menggunakan 6 strategi penerjemahan dan penerjemah kedua menggunakan 7 strategi penerjemahan dari 8 strategi penerjemahan menurut Mona Baker. Kedua penerjemah paling banyak menggunakan strategi penerjemahan substitusi budaya untuk menerjemahkan data yang sama karena kedua penerjemah lebih mengedepankan respon para pembaca agar istilah budaya tersebut lebih dapat dipahami. Hasil pembandingan persamaan menunjukkan bahwa latar belakang dan selisih waktu terbitan novel menjadi alasan kedua hasil terjemahan novel dianggap setara.

Translation is the process of transferring messages from the source language into the target language. Language and culture cannot be separated because language is a reflection of the lifestyle of a society. This study aims to reveal the types of cultural terms found in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel Gadis Pantai based on Newmark's theory (1988) along with the translation strategy used by Harry Aveling and Willem Samuels as translators in their English translation novel using Mona Baker's theory (2011). The data of this research are in the form of Indonesian cultural terms, especially Javanese and their translations into English. The method used is a comparative descriptive method. The results showed that there were 150 cultural terms found which consisted of material culture terms, social culture terms, organization terms, ecology terms and gestures and habit cultural terms. In this study, the first translator used 6 translation strategies and the second translator used 7 translation strategies out of 8 translation strategies according to Mona Baker. The two translators mostly use cultural substitution translation strategies to translate the same data because both translators prioritize the responses of the readers so that the cultural terms are more understandable. The results of the comparison of the equations show that the background of translators and the difference in the time of publication of the novel are the reasons why the two translations of the novel are considered equivalent.
