The Rising Prominence of Technology Companies in International Relations: The Case of the Big Tech Role in Global Governance for Global Security Issues

Facebook and Microsoft could be said as the most influential companies in the 21st Century as its existence and conduct of business are steadily shaping and providing new insights on decision making process related to global security issues. Their sudden appearance as a non-state actors noticeably disturbs the status quo of international community which previously dominated by state actors, continuously redefining the means of relationship between common industries with nations along with its government wherever it entered. This thesis highlights the unchecked growth of these new industries towards the status quo procedures of decision making process within international community in handling global security issues related to technological theat. Through the lens of Neoclassical Realism that attempted to explain a state foreign policy issues by incorporating domestic variables as it basis, the research will utilize the concept of social contract and company structural power as an attempt to measure Facebook and Microsoft�s incursion into the decision making process within international community, leveraging their position to be on par with those of state actors through the means of control over technological strategic resources.
