There are at least two reasons why theological-based dialogue is not popular today. First, the tendency to use the modern paradigm in conducting interreligious dialogue, which avoids theological discussions. Second, theological-based dialogue is considered too exclusive because it often is conducted by experts in theology and therefore excluding lay people. This thesis focuses on the role of Scriptural Reasoning (SR) as a model of interreligious dialogue, which includes wider participants and various religious traditions. It is based on a case study on Young Interfaith Peace Community (YIPC), an interfaith youth community in Indonesia that applies SR as a model for interreligious dialogue. In so doing, I have conducted some observations and interviews with key people at YIPC as well as some participants of their various programs. My research finds that, as an interreligious dialogue model, SR bridges the tendencies to strictly return to scriptures on the one hand, and to underline the importance of justice and equality on the other hand. Even though SR was originally an academic practice, its principle, which could be adapted to the needs of the participants, enables the inclusion of grassroots participants. Moreover, SR has several other potentials, which include: achieving the holistic form of dialogue, engaging conservative views in interreligious dialogue, building positive peace through theological-based dialogue, and voicing the grassroots concerns. I argue that SR could be employed as an alternative interreligious dialogue model in Indonesia, which gives theological-based dialogue an important place, but which could also be implemented at the grassroots level, especially among youth.
