The Greater Bay Area Economic Zone is a newly formed special economic zone by China that incorporates nine cities of Guangdong province and two special administrative regions of China dash Hong Kong and Macao. It aims to boost the region's economy and, to a greater extent, China's economy. The formation of the GBA and the economic projection imposed on it coincides with Hong Kong's economic decline and political instability in the wake of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement protest. With such critical events in Hong Kong and China relations, the GBA may act as China's political economy approach towards Hong Kong. Thus, the GBA may present an efficient political economy strategy for China to pursue its political and economic interests in the region. It then comes to the proposed research question of why China advances the Greater Bay Area economic zone despite Hong Kong's dwindling economic performance. This thesis offers two reasons divided into elaboration on the economic and political rationale of the program: the GBA as a channel to provide economic spillover effect on parties involved and to undermine one's autonomy through asymmetrical interdependence.
