Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have usually been synthesized through Hummers method prior to reduction by hydrazine using highly pure graphite (HPG) as the starting material. However, HPG is relatively expensive for mass production of high-quality of graphene. The use of toxic and harmful reductant such as hydrazine was also become concern in graphene synthesis. In this work, a greener and more sustainable synthesis of graphene from PET bottle waste through reduction by M. leucadendron leaf and bark extract was developed. Graphitic carbon from vacuum-heating treatment of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) was oxidized to form GO. Bioreduction of GO was done in various reaction time and extract concentration. Furthermore, study of the biomolecules involved in bioreduction was also carried out. Product characterization showed that PET-derived graphitic carbon can be alternative carbon source for synthesis of GO and rGO. Oxygen functional groups were successfully observed on the prepared GO and its bioreduction showed the formation of rGO. Reduction of GO by leaf extract (LE) showed optimal condition at 8 h reaction time and concentration of LE was greater than or equal to 10 g L-1. Whereas reduction by bark extract (BE) showed formation of rGO in various concentration of BE and ideal at 8 h reduction time. Therefore, M. leucadendron bark extract suggested to be more efficient reductant in this study. Chromatogram of LE before and after reduction showed decreasing in biomolecules concentration, they are including 1.8-cineole and eucalyptol. Biomolecules that responsible in bioreduction by BE was tannin compounds, including gallic acid, catechin, and caffeic acid.
