PEACE CORPS DAN DINAMIKA HUBUNGAN BILATERAL INDONESIA-AMERIKA SERIKAT, 1961-1965

Perang Dingin merupakan kesempatan emas bagi negara-negara dunia ketiga untuk melakukan langkah dekolonisasi Barat meskipun kompetisi hegemoni ideologi dua negara adidaya sedang berlangsung. Sebagai pemimpin blok Barat, Amerika Serikat melalui John F. Kennedy membentuk organisasi sukarelawan multinasional yaitu Peace Corps pada tanggal 1 Maret 1961. Organisasi ini memberikan kesempatan emas kepada warga Amerika untuk membagikan ilmu sesuai kebutuhan masyarakat warga dunia ketiga dan belajar memahami kebudayaan negara dunia ketiga. Indonesia menerima kedatangan sukarelawan Peace Corps pada tahun 1963 ketika hubungan personal SukarnoKennedy semakin erat karena persamaan visi dan ideologi. Kemudian, penelitian ini menggunakan arsip digital John F. Kennedy Library, Intenet Archive, koran terbitan luar negeri, koleksi Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia, dan referensi buku dan artikel lainnya. Program Peace Corps Indonesia merupakan strategi politik Kennedy untuk mengimbangi pengaruh Uni Soviet di Indonesia. Selain itu, para sukarelawan Peace Corps Indonesia juga menggarap bidang olahraga dan pendidikan sejalan dengan kebutuhan Indonesia. Namun, program ini tidak berjalan efektif karena hubungan Indonesia-Amerika Serikat kembali memburuk sepeninggal Kennedy. Akhirnya, program Peace Corps Indonesia berakhir pada 1965. Walaupun program ini berjalan singkat, kontribusi sukarelawan Peace Corps masih diperhitungkan bagi masyarakat setempat.

The Cold War was a golden opportunity for third-world countries to take steps to decolonize the West despite the ongoing competition for ideological hegemony of the two superpowers. As the leader of the Western bloc, the United States through John F. Kennedy formed a multinational volunteer organization, namely the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. This organization provides a golden opportunity for Americans to share knowledge according to the needs of thirdworld citizens and learn to understand the culture of third-world countries. Indonesia welcomed the arrival of Peace Corps volunteers in 1963 when SukarnoKennedy's personal relationship grew closer because of the common vision and ideology. Then, this research uses the digital archives of the John F. Kennedy Library, the Internet Archive, foreign newspapers, the collections of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, and other reference books and articles. The Peace Corps Indonesia program was Kennedy's political strategy to counterbalance the influence of the Soviet Union in Indonesia. In addition, Peace Corps Indonesia volunteers also work on sports and education in line with Indonesia's needs. However, this program did not work effectively because Indonesia-US relations deteriorated again after Kennedy's death. Finally, the Peace Corps Indonesia program ended in 1965. Although the program was shortlived, the contributions of Peace Corps volunteers still count for the local community.
