KONSEP ANIMAL RIGHTS DALAM INDUSTRI PUPPY MILLS DITINJAU DARI PERSPEKTIF UTILITARIANISME PETER SINGER

Seiring berjalannya waktu, manusia mulai mempraktikkan pembiakan anjing secara sengaja (intentional breeding). Praktik tersebut merupakan cikal-bakal industri Puppy Mills sebagai bentuk dari Commercial Breeding Establishment (CBE). Permasalahan yang muncul adalah ditemukannya data-data yang mengindikasikan bahwa aktualisasi pembiakan di lingkungan Puppy Mills belum memenuhi prinsip-prinsip animal rights. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian Utilitarianisme yang bertujuan untuk menganalisis konsep animal rights dalam industri Puppy Mills (sebagai objek material) ditinjau dari perspektif Utilitarianisme Peter Singer (sebagai objek formal). Model penelitian yang dipakai pada penelitian ini ialah model penelitian mengenai masalah aktual. Penelitian ini berfokus pada proses interpretasi, koherensi interen, holistika serta deskripsi mengenai penakaran perilaku pelaku bisnis industri Puppy Mills dan status moral hewan dan manusia dalam filsafat. Pemilihan metode didasarkan pada permasalahan yang telah dirumuskan dan digunakan sebagai instrumen dalam memperoleh solusi dari permasalahan tersebut. Langkah-langkah yang dilaksanakan pada penelitian ini secara umum ialah mendeskripsikan konsep animal rights dalam industri Puppy Mills dan dianalisis secara komprehensif melalui perspektif Utilitarianisme Peter Singer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: Pertama, terdapat persoalan-persoalan filosofis seputar animal rights yang muncul dalam praktek Puppy Mills, yakni ekploitasi terhadap anjing-anjing peranakan Puppy Mills. Tindakan eksploitatif tersebut menggambarkan orientasi berpikir para pelaku bisnis yang antroposentris, sehingga menempatkan status moral hewan lebih rendah dibandingkan manusia. Kedua, dalam kaitannya dengan pemikiran utilitarianisme Peter Singer, terbukti bahwa telah terjadi kegagalan dalam penerapan PEC dalam praktik industri Puppy Mills. Artinya, para pelaku bisnis telah memapankan spesiesisme dengan mengabaikan realitas bahwa hewan merupakan sentient being, hingga tirani atasnya tidak dapat dibenarkan.

Time over time, humans began to practice deliberate dog breeding. This practice turned out to be the forerunner of the Puppy Mills industry as a form of the Commercial Breeding Establishment (CBE). The problem that arises is the encounter of data indicating that the actualization of breeding in Puppy Mills has not fulfilled principles of animal rights. This research is a study of Utilitarianism with the concept of animal rights in the Puppy Mills industry (as a material object) from the perspective of Peter Singer's Utilitarianism (as a formal object). The research model used in this study is a model of the actual problem research. This research focused on interpretation, internal coherence, holistic, and description of the behavior of the Puppy Mills industry breeder and the moral status of animals and humans in philosophy. The selection of the method of problems have been formulated and used as an instrument in obtaining solutions to these problems. In general, the steps taken in this study are to describe the concept of animal rights in the Puppy Mills industry and comprehensively analyzed from the perspective of Peter Singer's Utilitarianism. The results obtained in this research showed that: First, there are underlying philosophical issues regarding animal rights that appear in the practice of Puppy Mills industry, namely the exploitation of Puppy Mills dogs. The exploitative actions illustrating anthtopocentric thinking orientation of Puppy Mills breeders, that placing animals moral status lower than humans. Second, in connection with Peter Singer utilitarian thinking, it is proved that there has been a failure in the application of PEC in Puppy Mills industrial practices. It means, the breeders have established speciesism way of thinking by ignoring sentience aspects of animals. Thus, humans domination towards animals cannot be justified.
