Oil palm is closely related to our daily life. However, the surge in demand for it has created serious social and environmental complications. Various initiatives have been mobilized to respond to this problem, one of which is the RSPO certification. Unfortunately, the RSPO is widely considered to be ineffective in reducing the rate of environmental damage caused by the palm oil industry. As a result, Indonesia left the RSPO membership and adopted its own standard, the ISPO. Malaysia, a few years later followed Indonesia’s step by applying its standard, MSPO, but without renouncing its membership in the RSPO. This thesis will examine why the decision was made from a cultural hegemony perspective, specifically neo-gramscian.
