Thanks to its unique natural conditions, Indonesia is blessed with a variety of ecosystems which allows it to sustain the life of many faunas, one of them being the Timor deer (Rusa timorensis). This native Indonesian species is now facing extinction due to a decrease in population caused by hunting and habitat loss, and is now a government-protected species in many national parks, such as the Baluran National Park. In order for the deer’s conservation to succeed, the timor deer’s usage pattern on their habitat must first be understood. As such this research aims to understand the timor deer’s spatial and temporal usage pattern towards the Bekol savannah within Baluran National Park, in hopes of attaining clues which will help in the planning of better conservation actions for the timor deers within the park. Field data was gathered throughout three weeks in the Bekol savannah of Baluran National Park, done from above a watchtower using the direct observation method. The entirety of the savannah was divided into grids with a 500 m x 500 m area, and then each of the grid’s field condition was noted. Observation of the deers’ usage of the savannah was done by watching and noting every activity of the deers, as well as the grid and time it was done in. Gathered data were then analyzed using descriptive statistic analysis, the chi square test, and counting the habitat selection index. Field observation results showed that the timor deers’ spatial and temporal usage pattern can be mostly explained like this: In the morning, the deer herd exits the forest and into the savannah to drink, interspersed with grazing and occasionally fighting. When the savannah’s temperature rises, most of the herd will return to the forest, while some deers remain to rest beneath the trees’ shade. They will stay there to rest and graze until the temperature decreases in the afternoon, at which point the herd will slowly move out of the forest to drink and bathe in the pools. Post-drinking, the deers will either revert to grazing, or begin lazing in the savannah, or move back into the forest. These activities continue until the sun begins to set, at which point most of the deers have already returned to the forest. On the other hand, the field observation results also implied the presence of habitat selection after the data was analyzed using the chi square test. When the counting of the habitat selection index was done, the results showed that the grids that were preferred the most by the deers, which were grid 1, 2, and 4, were grids containing or close to a water source, plenty of food, and/or plenty of shading. So, it can be summarized that the utilization of the savannah by the deers is focused on areas with or close to those resources. As such the implication for the timor deer’s conservation is to take into more consideration the availability of those sources within the savannah, placing future water sources in the deeper parts of the savannah, and to reinforce the prohibition of entering the savannah area towards the savannah’s visitors.
