Plastics are polymers that are commonly found in everyday life and are widely used in everyday life. However, after the utility is complete, the plastic will be discarded and become plastic waste that will pollute the environment. Therefore, an alternative material to replace plastic is needed. Biodegradable films are alternative to plastics because they have almost the same properties as plastics, but they are easily degraded by microorganisms. The material used as a biodegradable film is seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) because it contains polysaccharides, protein, and kappa-carrageenan that is known to have good film-forming properties. The purpose of this study was to determine the best amount of Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed and glycerol in forming the biodegradable film and to know the characteristics of the biodegradable film Kappaphycus alvarezii. The study was compiled based on a completely randomized design consisting of 2 factors, namely the amount of seaweed (RL) consisting of 3 treatments (1 gram, 1.5 grams, and 2 grams), and the amount of glycerol (G) that consisted of 3 treatments (1 gram, 2 grams, and 3 grams). The biodegradable film was made using the solution casting method. The parameters observed were mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation, Young Modulus, thickness), water vapor permeability (WVP), and biodegradability. The results showed that the most optimum biodegradable film with the best quality was RL1G1 sample (1 gram of seaweed and 1 gram of glycerol) with the following film characteristics: tensile strength value of 22.37 MPa, the thickness of 0.01 mm, elongation of 3.31%, the Young Modulus of 7.43 MPa WVP of 0.001119 g.mm/kPa.jam.m2, and the results of film biodegradability testing in the soil for 40 days were 73.87%. Overall, the Kappaphycus alvarezii film produced was transparent and homogeneous. However, the greater the seaweed content, the more yellowish the film will be.
