The research of 8-hydroxyquinoline modified coal bottom ash-silica sand as an adsorbent for Cu(II) metal ion in brass craft waste has been conducted. Coal bottom ash-silica sand was activated by HCl 6 M (ADPST) then modified using 8-hydroxyquinoline (ADPSTQ). Adsorbent with higher adsorption capacity was used to adsorb Cu(II) metal ion in brass craft waste. The characterization of the adsorbents were conducted using SEM-EDX, FTIR and XRD. The study of adsorption parameters included optimization of pH, adsorbent mass, contact time, initial concentration of adsorbate, kinetics and isotherm adsorption. Analysis of Cu(II) concentration was conducted using AAS. The characterization of SEM showed ADPS morphology in the form of ash particles mixed with impurities, while the particles of ADPST were denser and more porous. Analysis of EDX revealed coal bottom ash-silica sand were comprised mainly of Si, O, and Al which was confirmed with FTIR data due to the vibration of Si-O and Al-O. Several minerals were identified from XRD such as quartz, mullite, and hematite. The adsorption of 50 mg/L Cu(II) metal ion by using ADPST and ADPSTQ reached the optimum condition at pH 7, contact time of 5 minutes, ADPST mass of 0.2 g and ADPSTQ mass of 0.1 g. Both of them followed pseudo second order kinetics with the constant rates of ADPST and ADPSTQ were 0.174 and 0.262 g/mg minute, respectively. The adsorption of Cu(II) ion by using ADPST followed the Elovich isotherm model with the Elovich constant of 1.054 L/mg, while ADPSTQ followed the Langmuir isotherm model with the Langmuir constant of 3.640 L/mg. Adsorbent of ADPSTQ exhibited higher adsorptivity than ADPST and was used to adsorb Cu(II) metal ion in brass craft waste.
