For most people, the word metaphor will usually relate only to literature. For Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 2003), and now also for many other scholars behind them, metaphors reside in the mind as a complex system that govern the way we perceive the world around us. Language is only one of the different media to manifest the metaphorical concepts conceived in human mind. It is within this framework that the present study was conducted. Although a huge number of researches have been carried out to find evidence both in attempts to support and oppose this Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), more empirical evidence is still needed to support it, especially in the sub fields of theoretical linguistics and pragmatics. A corpus called the Corpus of Theoretical Linguistics and Pragmatics (CoTLiP) was specially constructed because corpus-based study was believed to be the best approach to fulfill the attempt. Ten articles published in Journal of Linguistics and another ten published in Journal of Pragmatics were selected by convenience method. The corpus, characterized as being specialized, closed, and comprised of whole articles, consists of over 150 thousand words. The number may still be relatively small in comparison with other corpora such as the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), however, because every single word had to be scrutinized, the number was just sufficient. The present study was relatively comprehensive in that it covered both the conceptual as well as the linguistic side of metaphors. It was aimed at answering three research questions concerning the linguistic metaphor distribution in the corpus, the existence of conceptual metaphors in it, and metaphors cognitive and communicative functions. A total of 31,380 metaphor-related words, or 2,020 expressions in every 10,000 words were found in the whole corpus. As supported by the chi-squared test results, the distribution of linguistic metaphors across the two sub disciplines was found to be significant. Between the two sub disciplines, theoretical linguistics contained more metaphorical expressions, and nominal metaphorical expressions was dominant in CoTLiP. A deeper investigation into the nominal metaphorical expressions showed that more nominals derived from verbs were found. To put it in a broader perspective, this specific finding was found to be in line with a study conducted by Biber et al. (1999) that a feature of academic prose is noun. In terms of conceptual metaphors, using the source domain as the platform for the investigation, the concepts of CONSTRUCTION, PLANT, and CRIMINAL LAW, among others, were found to be applied in the conceptual mappings and were widely spread in the corpus. These metaphors function to provide detailed information about the target domain, thus the structural metaphors. The ontological function of metaphors was demonstrated mainly through personification of abstract objects and the application of spatial prepositions in and on to abstract entities. The orientational, or coherence, metaphors were found to be expressed for example by using the preposition under, or adjectives high and low. Communicatively, metaphors were mostly seen as problem solvers in situations where difficulties in referring to (usually) abstract objects persisted. Metaphors were also found to serve other functions like expressing ideology and structuring a text. In conclusion, the results of the study confirm all the notions offered by CMT.
