Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is currently the pattern recognition algorithm that is most often used in image recognition. CNN can perform classification or recognition with very high accuracy, but the learining speed of CNN is very slow and the resources required are quite large. One of the causes of the long learning speed is the classification layer, namely the Fully Connected Layer (FCL) which uses backpropagation, with slow gradient based learning algorithm for learning, and all parameters are determined iteratively. This research proposes a combination of CNN with Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). ELM is a Single Hidden Layer Feedforward Neural Networks (SLFNs). ELM was created to overcome the weaknesses of feedforward neural networks, especially in terms of learning speed. The merging process is carried out using convolution layer extraction on CNN, which then combines it with the layer classification using the ELM method. The case study used is the classification of military objects, the cases chosen because they are related to military objects are still very much needed for the purposes of improving national defense, such as automatic target detection, the main technology for automatic military operations and surveillance missions. The test results show that the learning speed of the combination CNN and ELM model is faster, approximately 2 minutes compared to the normal CNN model. As for resource usage, on the normal CNN model, CPU resource usage is on average 57% smaller, RAM uses 3568MB of smaller resources, but on the GPU combination CNN and ELM model uses an average of 400MB smaller resources. The accuracy of the normal CNN model has a slightly higher accuracy than the combination CNN and ELM models, with a difference about 0.03 to 0.04.
