Along with the increase of wireless communication technology, services that use this technology keep growing. As a result, the need for radio frequency spectrum for accommodating the wireless communication technology is rising as well. This situation leads to a concern that someday the demand of the radio frequency spectrum will exceed the supply. Furthermore, the research shows that the radio spectrum utilization is still not efficient. To solve the aforementioned problems, a cognitive radio system is proposed. In cognitive radio system, unlicensed users (commonly known as secondary users (SU)) are allowed to utilize the licensed users (commonly known as primary users (PU)) frequency bands as long as the PU is not active in that frequency bands. To achieve this mechanism, a spectrum sensing technique is needed to identify PU's activity in its frequency bands. This technique is vital to prevent any interferences between PU and SU signals. Moreover, some SU's can work together to decide PU's activity in its frequency bands (cooperative sensing) or they can work separately (non-cooperative sensing). This document proposes two spectrum sensing techniques which are recognized as energy detection and cyclostationary feature detection (CFD), also this document considers two categories of input signals which are stationary signal and cyclostationary signal. In energy detection, PU's activity can be detected by comparing its energy in specific frequency bands to a predetermined threshold. To improve the accuracy of energy detection, power spectral density (PSD) of the observed signal is calculated before the detection process. Besides energy detection, this document suggests the CFD method which works by using the periodicity property of the observed signal if that signal is cyclostationary. Aggregate from autocorrelation values of the observed signal is compared to a predetermined threshold, similar to the energy detection method. To obtain the performance metrics from both methods, this document employs the probability of detection (PD) and the probability of false alarm (PFA). After those two probabilities are calculated, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) can be plotted. In addition, the performance of the spectrum sensing techniques is evaluated under certain modeling scenarios such as the amount of PU, sensing duration, the amount of averaged periodogram's segment (PSD based detection), noise intensity, modulation index, and some variables that are linked to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM is used to simulate a cyclostationary signal. The detection performance is better if the PD value is high while the PFA value is low.
