Chemical waste such as lead-acid batteries contribute greatly to environmental pollution and have a negative impact on public health due to toxic chemicals. To overcome these problems, battery failure prevention system on electronic devices is needed. This system named Battery Management System (BMS), with this device, battery condition will be maintained as safe and as optimal as possible. In BMS devices there are several functions such as voltage monitoring function, current monitoring function, and cell balancing function. For monitoring current on BMS, it usually uses several current sensors whose prices are quite expensive, thereby increasing the price of BMS devices. This Capstone design aims to design BMS devices at affordable prices and have several good functions such as State of Charge (SOC) function, current monitoring function, and cell balancing function. SOC function aims to monitor the capacity of the battery, using the Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) estimation method. The current monitoring function is carried out by estimation using equations which obtained through a simple battery model (rint model) so there is no need to use a current sensor. The balancing function makes possibility to balancing the capacity of the battery cell thereby reducing the possibility of failure in the battery cells. The method used in the cell balancing function is active cell balancing method that uses the concept of energy transfer between battery cells. Additionally the application of this BMS focuses on 3 cell Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries. The accuracy of the SOC estimation and the current estimation algorithm is known through the error value presented in the form of root mean square (RMSE). The smallest error value in estimation of SOC is 0.0832% with a limitation of the working area of 10% -100% SOC, and 0.2576 A for current estimation using bilinear discretization. To find out the performance of active cell balancing, testing with an initial SOC value of 63.07%; 29.51%; 26.99% resulting in a final SOC of 49.96%; 49.96%; 49.63%.
