A study on the adsorption ability of dithizone-immobilized coal fly ash from PT Madubaru, Bantul, Yogyakarta in adsorbing Ag(I) and Zn(II) ions from the solution was carried out and the results were compared with that of non-immobilized coal fly ash. This study includes the synthesis and characterization of activated and immobilized fly ash ash, optimization of parameters that affect adsorption, as well as metal ion desorption from the adsorbents to understand the mechanism of the adsorption process. Before being used, coal fly ash was first activated with concentrated HCl and then dithizone was immobilized on the surface of activated fly ash in toluene solvent. Activated and immobilized coal fly ash were characterized by Fourir-transformed infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). In the study of metal ion adsorption, the effect of pH of the solution, mass of adsorbent, interaction time and its adsorption kinetics as well as initial metal concentration and its adsorption isotherm models were investigated. The results showed that dithizone has been successfully immobilized on the surface of activated coal fly ash as shown by the occurrence of new peaks and peak shifts in the FT-IR spectral profiles and XRD diffractograms. Optimum conditions for the adsorption of Ag(I) and Zn(II) ions were obtained at pH 6, adsorbent mass of 0.02 g, interaction time of 45 minutes for Ag(I) and 60 minutes for Zn(II), and initial metal concentration of 100 ppm for Ag(I) and 80 ppm for Zn(II). The kinetic parameters for the adsorption of both Ag(I) and Zn(II) metal ions on activated and dithizone-immobilized coal fly ash follows the pseudo-2nd order reaction model with the rate constants (k) for Ag(I) respectively 0.170 and 0.221 g.mg-1.min-1 and for Zn(II) respectively 0.112 and 0.158 g.mg-1.min-1. Isotherm adsorptions of Ag(I) and Zn(II) ions are best described by Langmuir models with adsorption capacities for Ag(I) ions respectively 10.8x10-5 and 12.4x10-5 mol.g-1 and for Zn(II) ions 9.97x10-5 and 12.3x10-5 mol.g-1, involving the adsorption energies of respectively 21.63 and 25.28 kJ.mol-1 for Ag(I) and 21.03 and 22.64 kJ.mol-1 for Zn(II). Results of desorption studies reveal the dominance of ion exchange interaction in the adsorption of metal ions by activated coal fly ash, and hydrogen bonds and complexation in that of dithizone-immobilized coal fly ash. Overall, it is clearly seen that the adsorption ability of dithizone-immobilized coal fly ash for both metal ions is higher than non-immobilized coal fly ash due to various functional groups from dithizone that are available on the surface of the immobilized adsorbents.
