Women Detectives in Detective Fiction: A Formula Analysis on Dublin Murder Squad Series

Tesis sarjana ini adalah studi mengenai perumusan detektif wanita dalam karya Tana French yang bernama Cassie Maddox dan Antoinette Conway pada novel berseri Dublin Murder Squad, dengan menjelajahi konvensi fiksi hard-boiled yang menjadi pondasi konstruksi kedua detektif wanita tersebut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukkan bagaimana French menginovasi konvensi fiksi hard-boiled dalam pembentukan karakter detektif wanitanya. Dengan menerapkan teori formula cerita populer oleh John G. Cawelti (1976), hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa French telah mereka ulang stereotip hard-boiled dalam empat hal. Pertama, French melakukan inovasi formula hard-boiled dengan memperlua konsep marginal dari hanya tentang kelas ekonomi menjadi juga gender dan ras. Dengan demikian, French juga memperkenalkan inovasi keduanya yaitu mengganti stereotip hard-boiled yang mengedepankan kekuatan maskulin dengan perlawanan kepada kontrol patriarki. Ketiga, French mereka ulang hubungan antara detektif dengan karakter femme fatale dengan menempatkan detektif wanita. Adanya kesamaan pengalaman dan kemampuan melihat dari perspektif perempuan membuat detektif wanita tidak hanya menyingkap femme fatale sebagai pembunuh, namun juga motif dan skenario pembunuhannya. Terakhir, French juga mereka ulang sifat antitesis dari detektif hard-boiled sebagai manusia yang sentimental dan brutal dengan mendefinisikan kembali maknanya melalui tindakan detektif wanitanya, yang karenanya French menawarkan jalur feminin untuk mencapai keadilan. Hasil pengamatan ini menunjukkan bahwa inovasi formula pada wanita detektif karya Tana French merupakan perluasan dari investigator wanita di novel-novel revisi feminis cerita-cerita hard-boiled yang mengacu pada feminisme gelombang kedua. Akan tetapi, French juga mengomentari varian karakter baru yang terlahir dari pemikiran post-feminisme yang membedakkan karakter wanita detektifnya dari karakter wanita detektif di series feminis sebelumnya.

This undergraduate thesis is the study of the formulation of two women detectives in Tana French's work, Cassie Maddox and Antoinette Conway, in the Dublin Murder Squad Series by exploring the hard-boiled fiction conventions upon which the two female detectives are built. The aim of this study is to determine how French innovates the hard-boiled fiction conventions in the formation of her women detective characters. By applying the popular story formula theory by John G. Cawelti (1976), the results of this study indicate that French has innovated the hard-boiled stereotypes in four ways. First, French innovates the hard-boiled formulas by extending marginal concepts from just about economic class to gender and race. Thus, French also introduces the second innovation, which is the substitution of the hard-boiled stereotype that emphasized on masculine toughness with resistance to patriarchal control. Third, French re-established the relationship between the detective and the character femme fatale by placing the female detective in the story. Their similarity of female experiences and perspective with the femme fatale makes these women detectives not only reveal the femme fatale as a murderer, but also the motives and scenarios behind their acts. Finally, French also innovates the antithetical nature of the hard-boiled detective's presentation as a sentimental and brutal human being by redefining their meaning through their female detective actions, thus offering a 'feminine' path to justice. These observations show that French's innovations on hard-boiled conventions on her women detectives the extension of the women investigators in the antecedent feminist revisions of the hard-boiled stories which are heavily influenced by the second-wave feminist values. However, Tana French also inserts her own commentary on the new variants of variant of female character shaped by the new post-feminist discourse which separates her women detectives from those in the antecedent feminist hard-boiled revision series.
