MENGIMAJINASIKAN KEMBALI MASA LALU: KAJIAN POSTMEMORY SERI NOVEL MISS PEREGRINE'S PECULIAR CHILDREN KARYA RANSOM RIGGS

Penelitian ini membahas seri novel karya Ransom Riggs yaitu Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. Objek penelitian adalah tiga buku pertama dari seri tersebut yaitu Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Chilren, Hollow City: The Second Novel of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, dan Library of Souls: The Third Novel of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. Dalam penelitian ini, cerita dari ketiga buku dalam seri novel ini dilihat sebagai satu kesatuan yang utuh karena memiliki satu alur cerita yang terhubung dari satu buku ke buku berikutnya. Teori utama yang dirujuk adalah postmemory yang digagas oleh Marianne Hirsch. Pembahasan penelitian ini mencakup peran manusia yang menginterpretasikan foto, aspek sifat dasar foto, serta peran foto sebagai medium yang membantu alur cerita dan membangun dunia yang ada dalam cerita. Bahasan tersebut terbagi menjadi dua yaitu peran memori kolektif dan postmemory dalam cerita serta kaitan foto dan arsip dalam cerita. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengeksplorasi cara tokoh utama merekonstruksikan traumanya, menggali peran penggunaan foto dalam cerita, dan menyelidiki alasan cerita seri novel ini diinterpretasikan sebagai wujud karya postmemory. Semua aspek tersebut dieksplorasi untuk melihat pesan di balik penggunaan foto yang diberikan konteks oleh penulis novel dalam cerita. Hasil penelitian menunjukan foto-foto yang digunakan dalam cerita menjadi alat untuk memperkuat naratif sebagai metafora ingatan yang divisualisasikan. Hal ini dimaknai sebagai instrumen bagi narrator untuk menata ulang kekacauan dalam pikirannya setelah mengalami trauma yang mendalam serta memberi suara bagi pihak-pihak dalam sejarah yang dulu dibungkam yaitu perempuan dan anak-anak.

This research discusses a novel series by Ransom Riggs entitled Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. The object of research is the first three books in the series and they are Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Hollow City: The Second Novel of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, and Library of Souls: The Third Novel of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children. In this research, the story from the three books in the series is seen as a continuous whole connected from one book to the next. Postmemory by Marianne Hirsch is the main theory that is used to analyze them. The discussion of the research discusses the role of humans who interprets those photograhs and the nature of photographs as the means to enhance the plot as well as its role in world-building. The discussion is divided into two: the roles of collective memory and postmemory in the story as well as the connection between photographs and archive inside the story. The aim of this research is to explore how the main character reconstruct his trauma, to explore the roles of the photographs used in the story, and to investigate why this novel series is interpreted as a postmemorial work. The exploration of all of these aspects is done in order to see the message behind the use of photographs that are given contexts inside the story by the writer of the novel. The conclusion of the research shows the role of photographs in the story is to strengthen the narrative as visualized metaphors of memories. This is seen as a tool for the narrator to reorganize the chaos in his mind after experiencing deep trauma as well as giving a voice to the certain groups of people in history who are silenced, namely women and children.
