The Imprints of Patriarchal System in Dan Brown Series

Feminisme merupakan suatu gerakan yang berfokus pada kesetaraan perempuan. Kesetaraan yang dimaksud dalam hal ini adalah bahwa perempuan berhak mendapatkan kesetaraan dalam segala hal. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah karakter perempuan yang ada di dalam serial karya Dan Brown. Serial ini terdiri dari lima novel yang menjadi objek penelitian, diantaranya adalah; Angels and Demons (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Lost Symbol (2009), Inferno (2013) dan Origin (2017). Lima novel ini mencakup keseluruhan dari petualangan Robert Langdon dalam memecahkan misteri. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan peran karakter perempuan dalam serial Robert Langdon melalui perspektif feminisme liberal, dan kemudian menganalisa serial ini dengan tujuan untuk menemukan jejak sistem patriarki yang terkandung dalam cerita melalui karakter perempuan tersebut. Melalu perspektif ini, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa semua karakter perempuan dalam serial digambarkan sebagai perempuan yang mendapatkan kesetaraan dalam pendidikan, sosial, ekonomi dan politik, serta kebebasan dalam mengekspresikan diri. Meskipun faktanya semua karakter perempuan ini mendapatkan kesetaraan, namun, itu tidak benar-benar menghapuskan jejak sistem patriarki dalam cerita tersebut. Peneliti menemukan bahwa karakter perempuan dalam serial ini tetap mengalami penindasan oleh jejak sistem patriarki yang ada. Secara singkat, jelas terlihat bahwa walau sepintar apapun dan setinggi apapun jabatan dari para karakter perempuan tersebut, tidak menjadi jaminan bahwa mereka mendapatkan kesetaraan secara utuh seperti yang mereka harapkan.

Feminism is a movement that focuses on women's equality. This equality means that women should get the equal opportunities in every aspect. The objects of this research are the female characters that appeared in Dan Brown's series. There are five novels that become the objects of the study, which are; Angels and Demons (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Lost Symbol (2009), Inferno (2013) and Origin (2017). Those five novels are covering the whole Robert Langdon's adventure in solving the mystery. The aims of this research are to find the role of female character in Robert Langdon series through the perspective of liberal feminism, and then to analyze in order to find the imprints of patriarchal system which represented in the story through the female characters. Through this perspective, this study find that all of the female characters in the series are described to have the equal opportunity in education, social, economic and politics, and also the freedom to express themselves. Despite the fact that all of the female characters have experienced all of the equalities, in fact, it does not completely remove the imprints of patriarchal system in the story. The researcher found that all of female characters of this series are still experienced women oppressions from the imprints of patriarchal system. In short, it is clearly that no matter how smart and how high the position of the female character, it is not the guarantee that they can get the equality as full as they are expected.
