Character Development of Dorian Gray as Seen in Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray

Penelitian ini menganalisis perkembangan karakter Dorian Grey, karakter utama dalam The Picture of Dorian Grey oleh Oscar Wilde. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memahami perkembangan karakter Dorian Gray dan juga untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi perkembangannya. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan objektif seperti yang diusulkan oleh M. H. Abrams dan Lois Tyson. Pendekatan ini dinilai paling sesuai untuk melakukan analisis terhadap elemen intrinsik novel yaitu alur, karakter, karakterisasi, dan simbol. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan perubahan Dorian Grey dari seorang pemuda yang tidak bersalah menjadi lelaki yang korup. Hasil penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa pengembangan karakter Dorian Gray dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor; faktor eksternal yang berasal dari orang-orang di sekitarnya dan faktor internal yang berasal dari motivasi diri sendiri.

This research analyzes the character development of Dorian Gray, the main character in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The objective of this research is to understand the character development of Dorian Gray and also to find out the factors that influence his development. The analysis is conducted using objective approach as proposed by M. H. Abrams and Lois Tyson. This approach is suitable to conduct analysis on intrinsic elements of the novel namely plot, character, characterization, and symbols. The result of this research shows Dorian Gray changes from an innocent young man into a corrupted man. The result of this research also shows that Dorian Gray's character development is affected by several factors; the external factors which come from the people around him and the internal factor which come from his own motivations.
