Idiom Translation Strategies in Indonesian Translation of the Novel Prince Caspian

Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengidentifikasi strategi penerjemahan yang diterapkan oleh penerjemah novel Pangeran Caspian. Penelitian ini membatasi cakupannya dengan hanya berfokus pada leksemik idiom yang ada pada novel original. Untuk mencari leksemik idiom dalam novel, peneliti menggunakan teori klasifikasi idiom yang diusulkan oleh Adam Makkai (1972). Sebanyak 152 idiom dapat ditemukan dalam penelitian ini, dengan rincian 82 phrasal verb idiom, 37 tournure idiom, 24 phrasal compound idiom, 8 irreversible binomial idiom, dan satu incorporating verb idiom. Klasifikasi idiom keenam yang diusulkan oleh Makkai, pseudo idiom, tidak dapat ditemukan dalam novel. Idiom yang telah ditemukan di dalam novel kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teori strategi penerjemahan idiom yang diusulkan oleh Mona Baker (2018). Dengan menggunakan teori ini dapat ditemukan bahwa sebanyak 125 idiom diterjemahkan menggunakan teknik parafrase, 10 menggunakan omission of the entire idiom, 9 menggunakan omission of a play idiom, 7 menggunakan idiom with same meaning but dissimilar form, dan satu menggunakan idiom with similar meaning and form. Dari enam strategy yang diusulkan oleh Baker, ada satu strategi yang tidak digunakan oleh translator, yakni borrowing idiom from the source language.

This research aims to investigate the application of idiom translation strategy used by the translator of Pangeran Caspian. The scope of this research is limited by only investigating the lexemic idiom found in the original novel. In order to find the lexemic idioms in the novel the researcher employed the theory of classification of idiom proposed by Adam Makkai (1972). There are 152 idioms found in the novel, 82 idioms belong to the classification of phrasal verb idiom, 37 idioms belong to the classification of tournure idiom, 24 phrasal compound idioms, 8 irreversible binomial idioms, and there is 1 incorporating verb idiom. In this research, Makkai�s sixth classification of idiom, pseudo idiom, could not be found in the novel. The idioms found in the novel were analyzed by using Mona Baker�s (2018) theory of idiom translation strategies. The result showed that 125 idioms translated by using paraphrasing strategy, 10 idioms translated by omission of entire idiom, 9 idioms by using omission of a play idiom, 7 idioms translated by using idioms with similar meanings but dissimilar form, and one idiom by using an idiom with similar meaning and form. From six strategies proposed by Baker, strategy by borrowing idiom from the source language was not applied by the translator.
