Penelitian ini mengkaji novel L'Elegance du Herisson karya Muriel Barbery dengan menggunakan teori strukturalisme genetik Lucien Goldmann. Analisis berfokus pada struktur novel yang dibangun melalui relasi antara hero problematik dengan tokoh lain serta objek di dalam novel. Menurut Goldmann terdapat kesejajaran antara struktur novel dengan struktur sosial di masyarakat yang dimediasi oleh pandangan dunia pengarang. Novel L'Elegance du Herisson karya Muriel Barbery menceritakan kehidupan masyarakat elite intelektual yang bermukim di apartemen mewah di Paris. Kelompok intelektual tersebut dimunculkan sebagai orang-orang yang gagal dalam memberikan kebermanfaatan bagi manusia lain. Hasil analisis menunjukkan pandangan dunia Barbery terhadap intelektualitas sebagai kritik sosial atas fungsi intelektualitas yang tereduksi menjadi alat legitimasi kekuasaan seseorang dalam tatanan hierarki masyarakat.

This research aims to reveal Muriel Barbery's worldview in the novel L'Elegance du Herisson using genetic structuralism approach. This research focuses on the structure of the novel through the relation between the problematic hero with other characters and objects in the novel. According to Goldmann, the structure of the novel is parallel with the structure of the society and being mediated by worldview. L'Elegance du Herisson tells the life of the intellectual elite who inhabit a luxurious apartment in Paris. This group is depicted as people who fail to prove their worth to other human beings. The result shows that Barbery's worldview appears as a form of social criticism toward the role of intellectuality that is reduced as merely a tool to legitimate a person position in the social hierarchy.
