SINTESIS 1,1-DIPENTOKSIPENTANA DARI 1-PENTANOL MENGGUNAKAN KATALIS Ni/KARBON AKTIF; SYNTHESIS OF 1,1-DIPENTHOXYPENTANE FROM 1-PENTANOL USING Ni/ACTIVATED CARBON CATALYST

Synthesis of 1,1-dipenthoxypenthane from 1-pentanol using Ni/activated carbon (Ni/AC) as catalyst has been studied. The research was started by activating carbon from coconut shell at a temperature of 450-500 °C and followed by activation at 850 °C using CO2 gas. Mineral impurities on activated carbon was washed using acetone, 1.0 M HCl for 3 times and 1.0 M NH4Cl, then it was dried. Impregnation of Ni on activated carbon was carried out using salt precursor of NiCl2·6H2O within 1% Ni and then was reduced at 400 °C using hydrogen gas. The acidity of catalysts was tested by ammonia adsorption. In this study, the effect of temperature and mass of catalyst of 1,1-dipenthoxypenthane product was examined. Product of the synthesis was analyzed using Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that the amount of ammonia adsorbed into activated carbon and Ni/AC catalyst were 8.70 and 10.50 mmol/g, respectively. Ni concentrate was impregnated on activated carbon as analyzed using ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) that is 0.8%. The percentage of 1,1- dipenthoxypenthane as analyzed using GC and GC-MS was 56.35% for the Ni/AC catalyst at 450 °C and the amount of the catalyst of 12 g using N2 gas flow.
