ABSTRACT Angkringan is a timeless business. Angkringan enters the Special District of Yogyakarta (DIY) since 1950 and it still develops until the present time. Angkringan which develops now is not only traditional angkringan using cart, tent and being at the edge of the street, but also the modern-concept Angkringan using permanent building and selling more varied foods. Besides that, today’s era is more developed with various stalls either in small, medium or big scale, which makes the competition among the stalls be tighter. The research method used was the descriptive qualitative research which gives description of a phenomenon holistically, makes prediction, and classifies a symptom. The data was obtained from traditional and modern angkringan sellers, the suppliers, the angkringan customers, and the stakeholders. The data gathering was conducted by doing observations, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis was done by reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusion. On the other side, the validity of the data was tested by the triangulation of the data source, the methods, the researchers, and the theories. This research used social capital theory, formal and informal sector concept, the meaning or survival strategy and angkringan as the case in analyzing the survival strategy to angkringan sellers in Yogyakarta city and the surrounding in maintaining the business until it survives to the today’s era. The result of the research shows that the social capital on angkringan business is influential enough in maintaining the business. The social connection is the main contributor which can make someone be an angkringan seller. The trust on this business lies on the payment system and the mechanism of depositing the goods from the suppliers even though the sellers also cook their own food. The value hold by the seller is not for taking any profit as much as possible. The other strategy used is the addition of various menus, such as sachet drinks, instant noodles, and some other new menu. Such a thing does not work on modern angkringan. The work connection between the sellers and suppliers is made based on work contract. Therefore it will give economic benefits instead of the social one. This thing happens due to the fact that suppliers do mistakes and the sellers can just terminate the employment freely.
