Cool Japan sebagai Strategi Cultural Diplomacy Jepang di Asia Tenggara

Since 1960s the Japanese Culture especially pop-culture continued to grow until now. The climax of its development is about the end of the 1990s, precisely in 2002 when an article written by Douglas McGray titled “Japan’s Gross National Cool” that published in the Foreign Policy Magazine. This article created a new term called Cool Japan, which is used to call all cultures that come from Japan. The increasing role of soft power in the recent time makes Cool Japan serve as an important source for Japanese soft power. Cool Japan then used as one of cultural diplomacy strategy in the policies of Japan, especially for Southeast Asian countries, which on one hand is a strategic region for Japan but on the other hand has a fairly complicated relationship with Japan. As cultural diplomacy strategy, Cool Japan has several advantages or benefits for the Japanese Government, such as: to establish a positive image in Southeast Asian community, to develop the country’s economy through cultural industry as well as a tool to compete with cultural products from China and South Korea, especially those coming to Southeast Asian region.
