This thesis will discuss the rejection of Mahathir Mohamad on assistance from the IMF in overcoming the economic crisis that occurred in Malaysia in 1997. While other countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea decided to seek assistance from the IMF, Malaysia which was then under the governance of Mahathir Mohamad had a different policy. Mahathir Mohamad decided not to seek assistance from the IMF and prefer to resolve the crisis by maximizing the role of domestic actors without assistance from a foreign party. By using the theory of the relationship between personal characteristics of leaders with the foreign policy of a country, the author will analyze the personal characteristics of Mahathir Mohamad and his decision not to seek assistance from the IMF. Therefore, this thesis will attempt to answer this question: Why did Mahathir refuse to ask the IMF for help in tackling the economic crisis that hit Malaysia in 1997-1998? This thesis will discuss two main points. First, the analysis of personal characteristics of Mahathir Mohamad. Second, the policies taken by Mahathir in the effort to overcome the economic crisis that occurred in Malaysia.
