In Durkheim's view, Tualang tree in Sengkuang Daok village is a totem. The tree is owned by the family through inheritance and is considered a symbol of a particular clan. On the other hand, this tree is also worth sacred. Some people believe in a myth that logging can lead to disaster for the whole village. Interestingly there is one member of the clan who dared to sell and privatize Tualang tree by cutting it for economic profit. As a consequence there are clan members who have resisted the logging plan. The clan member believes that the process of commodification and privatization accompanied by logging can bring disaster to Sengkuang Daok village. However, the resistance issued is not heard by other clan members. Thus the privatization process proceeded smoothly. The occurrence of privatization of family property shows the existence of cultural transformation in Sengkuang Daok society. As a part of social phenomenon, the privatization are motivated by historical factors. In Marvin Harris's view, the historic process is determined by demographic and infrastructure changes. Therefore this article seeks to address the privatization and sale of family trees in historic ethnographic writing through the Marvin Harriss view.
