The Elements of Fantasy in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis unsur-unsur fantasi dalam The Wonderful Wizard of Oz oleh L.Frank Baum. Unsur-unsur fantasi yang menjadi tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) menggambarkan karakteristik fantasi yang diwakili oleh The Wonderful Wizard of Oz oleh L.Frank Baum, dan (2) menggambarkan jenis dan fungsi fantasi di dalamnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan objektif yang menitikberatkan pada unsur fisik pada buku. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik, jenis dan fungsi fantasi. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa di dalam buku ini terdapat elemen-elemen fantasi, yaitu (1) karakteristik, (2) jenis dan (3) fungsi. Karakteristik fantasi yang ditemukan dalam novel adalah (1) cerita, (2) karakter umum, (3) keterlibatan dunia lain, (4) penggunaan kekuatan sihir dan supranatural, (5) perbedaan jelas antara yang baik dan yang jahat, dan (6) pencarian. Jenis fantasi yang ditemukan dalam novel tersebut adalah (1) fantasi tinggi, (2) fantasi portal, dan (3) fantasi heroik. Fungsi fantasi yang ditemukan dalam novel tersebut adalah (1) fungsi pelarian, (2) ekspresif, dan (3) interogatif.

This research is aimed to analyze the fantasy in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum. The elements of fantasy that become the objectives of this research are (1) describing the characteristics of fantasy represented in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum, and (2) describing the kinds and functions of fantasy in it. This research uses objective approach which concerns to the physical elements of the book. The objective of this study is to identify the characteristics, kinds and functions of fantasy. The findings of the research show that the elements of fantasy are inclusive in the book, namely (1) characteristics, (2) functions and (3) kinds. The characteristics of fantasy found in the novel are (1) story, (2) common characters, (3) evocation of another world, (4) the use of magic and supernatural power, (5) a clear sense of good and evil, and (6) quests. The kinds of fantasy found in the novel are (1) high fantasy, (2) portal fantasy, and (3) heroic fantasy. The functions of fantasy found in the novel are (1) the escapist function, (2) the expressive, and (3) the interrogative.
