The Effect of Subsidy, Secularity and Inequality on Religious Group Participation

Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor penentu ukuran optimal kelompok agama. Meskipun penelitian sebelumnya telah mencoba pertanyaan serupa, penelitian tersebut mengasumsikan satu syarat mengenai preferensi religious, yang masih memiliki celah antara apa yang sebenarnya orang-orang inginkan dalam mengambil keputusan. Penelitian ini menggabungkan kondisi kedua tentang skema redistribusi di dalam kelompok agama. Dengan mengasumsikan jemaat kaya berjumlah tetap, faktor-faktor penentu rasio jemaat miskin terhadap jemaat kaya dan besaran rasio tersebut diperoleh dengan memodifikasi penelitian sebelumnya oleh Berman (2000). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa rasio tersebut meningkat apabila orang miskin kurang sensitif terhadap perubahan pendapatan, dan rasionya tidak terpengaruh oleh kemiskinan absolute, namun dipengaruhi oleh ketidaksetaraan.

This research tries to find out the determinants of the optimal size of religious group. Although previous researches have tried similar questions, those researches assumed one condition about religious preference, that still have a gap between what actually people are based to make decision. This research incorporates second condition about redistribution scheme within religious group. Assuming fixed number of rich congregation, the determinants of the ratio of poor congregation to the rich and magnitude of them to the ratio are derived by modifying the previous research by Berman (2000). The result shows the ratio increases when the poor are less sensitive to the income change, and the ratio is not affected by the absolute poverty, but is affected by inequality.
