Topik: Topik penelitian ini adalah pengaruh pembungan Pelabuhan Emmahaven terhadap kehidupan sosial ekonomi masyarakat Rantau Pesisir. Permasalahan Penelitian: 1. Mengapa pemerintah kolonial Belanda melakukan pembangunan pelabuhan kelas A Emmahaven di Westkust Sumatra? 2. Perubahan apa saja yang terjadi setelah pembangunan Emmahaven? Tujuanpenelitian: 1. Menjelaskan alasan pemerintah kolonial membangun Emmahaven 2. Mengkaji pengaruh kebijakan pemerintah kolonial Belanda terhadap pembangunan pelabuhan Emmahaven. 3. Mendokumentasikan kehidupan sosial-ekonomi masyarakat pesisir Westkust Sumatra setelah adanya pelabuhan Emmahaven. 4. Menambah historiografi masyarakat maritim di Indonesia. Metode: Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian sejarah yang dimulai dari pengumpulan sumber, kritik intern dan ekstern, analisis dan penulisan. Sumber-sumber penelitiannya berupa bundel arsip Dinas Pekerjaan Umum Belanda, Memorie van Overgave pegawai pemerintah, Staatblad, Surat Kabar berbahasa Belanda dan Melayu, Buku dan artikel terkait. Kesimpulan: Pembangunan Pelabuhan Emmahaven memberi pengaruh pada aspek fisik lingkungan, ekonomi dan sosial Rantau Pesisir. Perubahan lingkungan terlihat pada optimalisasi lahan yang dilakukan di area Teluk Bayur dan sekitarnya, munculnya kampung-kampung, serta permasalahan sanitasi dan wabah penyakit pes yang menyebar dari pesisir. Pengaruh pada aspek ekonomi operasional pelabuhan dan perdagangan memberi peluang pekerjaan baru meskipun pusat ekonomi tetap berada di Kota Padang. Pergeseran adatkepemilikan tanah orang Minangkabau menjadi pengaruh sosial dari keberadaan pelabuhan. Selain itu perubahan sosial lainnya yang terjadi di masyarakat Rantau Pesisir dipengaruhi dari peningkatan jumlah penduduk di sini.

Topic: This research topic is influenced by Emmahaven Port Development to social Economic life of Rantau Pesisir Society. Issues: 1. Why did Dutch colonial government develop a class A Emmahaven port in the West Coast of Sumatra? 2. What were the changes that occured after the development of Emmahaven Port? Objectives: 1. Explaining the reason behind the development of Emmahaven Port by the colonial government 2. To study the influences of the Dutch Colonial Govenment regulation towards the development of Emmahaven Port 3. To document the social-economic lifes of the coastal communities of the West Coast of Sumatra after the establishment of Emmahaven Port. 4. To give a contribution to the historiography of maritime communities in Indonesia. Methods: The metode that have been used for this research is history research method, which start from collecting sources, intern and extern critics, analysing, and writing. The research sources consist of the archives from Dutch Public Work Office, Memorie van Overgave of the government employees, Staatblad, newspapers that used Dutch and Malay language, and all of the related books and articles. Conclusions: The establishment of Emmahaven Port gave influences to the environment, economies and social aspects in Rantau Pesisir. The changing of the physical environment can be seen from the effort to optimalize the landuse in Teluk Bayur and surrounding, the emerging of kampongs, and also the problem of sanitation and pest epidemic from the coastal areas. In economic aspects, the operational of Emmahaven port had opened the new working field for everyone although the central economic activities were still in Padang. The changing of Minangkabau landownership custom became a social influence of the landuse of Emmahaven port. Another social change that occured in the Rantau Pesisir communities was influenced by the increasing of inhabitant and the ethnic diversity in this periode.
