Agricultural waste is one of potential sources for biogas production because of its abundance and low cost. On the other hand, lignocellulose content in agricultural wastes limits its utilization for anaerobic digestion. Gasification can be applied to pretreat the lignocellulosic components by converting agricultural wastes into synthetic gas (syngas), which is further converted to biogas via anaerobic digestion. Nevertheless, inhibitors such as toluene (C7H8) and naphthalene (C10H8) are accordingly produced alongside with syngas. An alternative to overcome this challenge is to encapsulate the microbial cells within membrane layers. Hydrophilic membrane can thereafter be integrated in order to hinder the contact between cells and hydrophobic inhibitors. In this study, the performance of reverse membrane bioreactor (rMBR) in the presence of toluene and naphthalene as inhibitors is evaluated. Two configurations of reactors, consisting of membrane encapsulated cells (rMBR) and free cells (FC) were applied. Three different levels of hydraulic retention time (HRT) were studied using the medium containing toluene or naphthalene or a mixture of toluene and naphthalene. All reactors were run in semi-continuous operation at 55oC. The results showed that the methane yield from the rMBR system was higher than that of FC system at all HRTs. Furthermore, rMBR reactors kept the VFA concentration low, as well as the pH at desired interval for cells to grow. Biogas composition also showed a better result in rMBR reactors, where the methane ratio was higher. Last but not least, according to this experiment, toluene and naphthalene started to inhibit at concentration of 3.142 g/L and 0.629 g/L.
