Ikterus neonatorum umumnya terjadi pada bayi yang baru lahir. Bilirubin tak terkonjugasi tingkat tinggi dapat menyebabkan kerusakan pada saraf pendengaran dan ganglia basalis. Kerusakan pada telinga bagian dalam atau ke jalur saraf dari telinga bagian dalam ke otak boleh menyebabkan SNHL dan kemudian keterlambatan bicara.

Neonatal jaundice is commonly occurs in newborn baby. High level of unconjugated bilirubin can cause damage to the auditory nerve and basal ganglia. Damage to the inner ear or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain lead to SNHL and later to speech delay.
