This collection telling the aspirations of young Indonesian women serve as an attempt to demonstrate the interconnection of the modern Indonesian women; their social life through the various socio-cultural life constructs and the nation discourses spanning through the heavily social engineered New Order period and the Post New Order period of new independence. The aspirations of these young Indonesian women are the products of their collective life experience as daughters and members of their social cycle. These aspirations are told through the silhouettes cast by these women. Silhouette, an anthropological method of telling ones life story is adopted to represent the aspirations of young Indonesian women. The aspirations of these young women transcend the traditional socio-cultural construct of their identities as daughters, girlfriends, future wives and mothers; and humanized their existence as real people who have personal aspirations and goals. These aspirations reflects their own desires mixed with the different discourses in their lives, be it familial, cultural, or political. The attention of this thesis focus on the aspiration of four individual young Indonesian woman in Yogyakarta. They share with us their personal aspirations after the completion of their studies. This thesis studies into how their individual familial and cultural upbringing, together with the different national social construction efforts, come together to affect their cognitive identity as young adults and therefore, their aspirations as young Indonesian women. In this process of deconstruction, it is through the analyzing of the exploration of these aspirations which we find a common trait amongst these four women; the importance of the familial structure before their personal aspirations. This emphasis on the family first mentality is a result of the social constructions on these women.
