This study seeks to investigate the direct and indirect factors determining deforestation in Indonesia. The study will estimate a linear regression equation relating deforestation rate to various factors of deforestation determinant representing the direct and indirect effects, namely timber production, agriculture productivity, urbanization, education, and population growth. To avoid size bias, the initial level of forest stock is added as a regressor. In particular, the timber production, the productivity in agriculture, and urban development adversely affect deforestation. Meanwhile, population and education level are not be verified to be the causes of deforestation in Indonesia. However the effect of population on deforestation has somehow been included in the variable urban. These findings have important policy implications such as the need to anticipate a higher deforestation because of urbanization, giving priority to agricultural intensification than extensification, more emphasis in terms of conservation function rather than the production one in the forest management, suppress the rate of population and increasing level of tertiary education.
