The title of the thesis is Local Revitalization Efforts : A Lesson from One Village One Product Movement in Oita. The thesis is developed with a historical review of the One Village One Product Movement in Oita Prefecture, Japan. Interdisciplinary approach was used to describe the features of the movement, that is history, socio economy and philosophy. The thesis also attempts to identify the unique characteristics of the movement and make a consideration whether the movement can be implemented in a regency in Indonesia. One Village One Product Movement proposed by Governor of Oita Prefecture, Morihiko Hiramatsu, in 1979, basically for three reasons : (1) to overcome depopulation and loss of vitality of Oita because of the migration of young people; (2) to seek and cultivate specific products that reflect the characteristics of local people : and (3) to minimize the dependency upon central government and to promote regional development. The principles of One Village One Product Movement are : (1) Local yet Global; (2) Self Reliant and Creativity; and (3) Human Resource Development. The success of One Village One Product Movement attracted much attention both domestically and from abroad. By 1980s and 1990s many governments in Asia launched various projects to apply the movement. The One Village One Product Movement is applicable to be implemented in the local area.
