Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) can be utilized to represent remaining battery capacity in addition to the State of Charge (SOC). Since battery capacity is related to the energy amount of battery, therefore, it is necessary to monitor the OCV. In this regard, the OCV is monitored by employing OCV estimation since direct measurement of the OCV in real time is not possible when the battery is operating. OCV estimation may be found in battery charge where it serves to guide the charging mechanism in order to avoid overcharge. This study is especially concerned with simple battery charge in small SOC range for applications such as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) where constant charging current is utilized. In this case, OCV estimation becomes a challenging task since the charging current is unfortunately possible to fluctuate around its specified constant value, resulting in different OCV values at a given SOC which is known as undesired hysteresis. Accordingly, uncertainty exists in the OCV-SOC relationship and, therefore, OCV estimation error will be produced if the uncertainty is not properly handled. In order to solve the problem, an Unknown Input Observer (UIO) is proposed in this present study. The UIO is designed to decouple the uncertainty, which is considered unknown, from the OCV estimation error by performing some algebra. For this purpose, an electric circuit model (ECM) namely Thevenin battery model is utilized to represent the battery dynamics where the OCV source is modelled as a capacitor. The effectiveness of the designed UIO in OCV estimation is demonstrated through simulation where pulsed charging current and varying charging current are generated. The result shows that the designed UIO yields faithful OCV estimate given initial OCV estimation error, implying that robust OCV estimation against uncertainty caused by undesired hysteresis is achieved. An important note to remember is that the uncertainty signal does not need to be known which, accordingly, eases the OCV estimation.
